The rest of the world is catching on to a philosophy that creative marketers have preached for years: content is queen, and it’s here to stay. One of the fastest growing content formats to emerge in the last decade (and one that has only continued to climb throughout the pandemic) is podcasting.

From Pulitzer Prize-winning longform investigative series, to 1:1 interviews with global leaders to snackable pop culture digests, podcasting has become a popular and accessible way to share information and insights with a wide range of audiences. For many creators and content marketers, the challenge in starting a podcast lies in narrowing focus and format to create a ground-up strategy that will benefit your bottom line.

Podcasts can also go beyond an audio-only experience. Our podcast work is rooted in our history with broadcast, and we use recording practices and software to get high quality recordings and dynamic content from our recording artists. Because we use some of the same technology we use for recording video sessions, we can apply those same practices to create more active content like live broadcasts, video content and more.

Thinking about embarking on a new podcast adventure? Consider how you might tackle the following steps.

Where to Start

Determine your format, length, topic and guests/hosts, as well as your target audience, distribution channels, goals and measurements for success.

Team + Roles

Running a successful podcast is often a team effort. Consider whether you want to bring on a scriptwriter, producer, engineer or additional technical support.

Creative Assets + Messaging

Develop a brand strategy for your podcast. What is it called? What does the logo look like? How do you want to summarize your podcast in series and episode descriptions?

Technology + Equipment

Create your list of required technology, from audio software to a microphone and sound package.

Logistics

Decide where and when recording will take place (in a studio? remotely?) and how to get the proper equipment to the participants.

Post-Production

You’ve completed all of the planning and successfully recorded your first episode, now you just need to introduce it to the world. Develop a post-production plan that includes everything from editing to marketing.
